Thanks for the observations - While I had her openned up I cleaned up a lot of grunge around the plug - this may have allowed the spark plug cable to short more easily.
Not overly concerned about cracking - figure if the bike was running at highway speed and I ran into rain - the engine would get soaked so washing it seems logical .
